Need to Know: Canva for Brand Design

If you’re looking for design resources, chances are you’ve heard of Canva.

Canva is a great tool for businesses and individuals just getting started and needing some graphics and designs to get the ball rolling.

I'm here today to share three things you’ll want to keep in mind if you’re considering using Canva to make a logo and other branding elements for your business.

Canva Owns Your Designs

While Canva is great for basic designs, you'll want to remember that Canva ultimately owns every design created on their platform. If you create a logo, it won’t be able to be trademarked or copyrighted, so I recommend Canva logos only until you have the ability to invest in a professional logo that truly belongs to you.

Canva is an Open Platform

Everyone who uses Canva has access to the same logo templates, design elements, and more that you do, so it’s very possible to have a nearly identical logo to hundreds of other business owners. If you’re looking to stand out with a unique identity, a professional designer will be able to help you create a strategy-driven logo designed purposefully for your business.

It’s also important to note that there have been instances of Canva being issued cease and desist requests for designs that were recreated based on the works of other professional designers. If you decide to go the Canva route, take a quick gander about Google to make sure the design you're using for a logo isn’t included in one of those instances!

Quality and Flexibility

Canva has nice templates and hundreds of designs so you have a variety of looks and styles. If you’re just getting started, they’ll be a great tool to get you up and running. It’s normal to need more versatility and fine-tuning in your designs down the road though, so that’s when a professional designer becomes even more necessary.

Designers are able to provide alternate logos, color variations, and various file types for all the applications you may need. If you need to fine-tune designs, a professional is there to help you with those design needs and keep you looking professional and consistent across the board!

While I am a brand strategist and designer myself, I do recommend Canva to people all the time when they’re not ready for full brand strategy and design as it is a good tool to help them when just starting out. I want you to succeed and feel confident as a business owner, which is why I want you to know about these three limitations before you get started!
